The Winds of Change by Isaac Asimov

I’ve read a few Isaac Asimov books so far and have very much enjoyed all I’ve come across so far (although it will be quite a slog to get through them all as, according to Wikipedia, there are currently 515 items in Asimov’s bibliography—not counting his individual short stories). If you haven’t read any then you definitely should as Asimov is a gifted writer with the ability to get his point across clearly and succinctly. This book is a collection of some of his short stories that were originally published elsewhere in a variety of magazines and newspapers. He’s probably not quite as gifted as Roald Dahl in the short story category but the stories are excellent nonetheless.

There is quite a range of topics covered in this collection as they were all written for a wide variety of different audiences – from science fiction magazines to fashion magazines. I particularly liked the story which was used as inspiration for the cover illustration in which a famous fashion designer is hired to give some flying suits a touch of elegance but goes on to redesign the whole thing in a story which is a great example of Asimov’s style.

I’ve yet to read any of his work other than science fiction but I find it hard to believe it’s not going to be anything other than superb. I think I may give one of his mystery story’s a try soon if i can manage to wean myself off the sci-fi for a while…
