Herrods Xmas Bizzare

316564_10151366507900148_1713002108_n

Now Herod wasn’t the nicest person who’s ever lived but that doesn’t mean the people involved in this little pop up shop are the same, in fact quite the opposite. From Herrod himself:

We’re not only stocking fine contemptorary art, porcelain with a twist, but there’s also an exclusive selection of retro garments nestled in one corner. We think it’s possibly a one-stop-chrimbo-present-buyin-shop… but then we are biased (and delusional).

If your in the area i would definitely suggest popping in. I was down there the other day setting up and saw some absolutely fantastic pieces from the likes of Rowan Newton, Carl Cashaman, Remi Rough, SPQR and Agent Provocateur to name a few. Oh and us as well!!!

The pop up shop is only open for this week can be found near Waterloo station at:

95-96 Lower Marsh, London SE1 7AB
Monday 17 to Monday 24 December
11am to 6pm / Wednesday 19 ’til 8pm

Love & Security

Now here at idiot youth we just love to see our namesake characters – namely young folk being stupid. And here we have the case in point. Take some naked guys, fire extinguishers full of paint and a train yard somewhere in Germany and combine them all together. What do you get? You’ll just have to watch the video above to find out…

Now i’m hardly condoning vandalism (well that’s not entirely true) but I particularly like the silly dances they do at some point. Classic.

Beauty & the Beast – DJ Claymore

Beauty & the Beast – DJ Claymore – From way back in 1994!

I needed to find a particular old mixtape from the early 90’s for a project i’m working on and so put the word out to a few old friends who would possibly still have a stash of such items to see if they could find what I was looking for. Not only did i turn up trumps with what I was looking for but managed to come up with a few of my old tapes from when I was but a child. I took my djing more seriously back then and was, as you’ll hear, firmly into house. I can probably scratch no better now than I could then but god loves a trier. As it was the early 90’s there is no Traktor or Serato involved so it was purely me and some vinyl on my trust 1210’s. They don’t make them like they used to. At least that’s what i’m saying and i’m sticking to it…

I’ve got a dirty mind by id-iom

Now this one by my boys – id-iom is an absolute corker. I love the picture and i love what they have to say about it as well:

There’s something that has been becoming ever more clear in my mind the older I get and that is that nearly all women are truly depraved. On the surface they may seem composed and serene but in reality they can match any man when it comes to filthy and impure thoughts. When women are in groups the kind of things they talk about aren’t shopping or any new beauty regimes, what is actually talked about is just down right dirty and I don’t mean anything so crass as ‘lady troubles’.

These women talk about anything any group of men will talk about but its nearly always about 10 times worse with incredible bouts of vulgarity. The only reason i know this is a technique i’ve learnt called ‘keeping mum and getting drunk’ which, if you’re good at, will eventually lead to them chattering away and forgetting that you are even there. It is at this point that the magic really starts. Next time I’m in half a mind to try and record it – although i’d probably have to fear for my safety for a long time afterwards…

Cheers

Ahh!! So true lads, like you, its taken me a fare bit of time to figure this out as well.

Come one, come all (by id-iom @ Whitecross Street Party)

Come one, come all

Come one, come all

So the boys over from id-iom were painting at the Whitecross Street Party this past Saturday and for their picture they did a reworking of the idiot youth banner which they did for us a while ago. I’m sure he’s looking a little more sinister here than in our banner…

At least he’s being pretty inclusive and inviting everyone to come join in the fun. All hail idiot youth!

Storm Bird by id-iom

WOW! is the only way to describe it i think but i’ll let you decide.Via id-iom’s YouTube channel:

mmmm. How to explain Stormbird. I’m not really sure if any explanation I can give can adequately describe our thought processes when creating this stop-motion epic. The ‘storyline’ just kind of suggested itself. It’s probably easier to explain it’s conception than how we developed such a monster. It came about when we had id-iom’s good friend Dave over from LA for a while. He’s known for doing a bit of video production/editing so after consumption of a few beers down at the studio we (stupidly) decided that a short stop-motion video might be a good idea. It wasn’t. After over 2600 shots over the best part of a week in the freezing cold basement making just one tiny adjustment after another we were close to death by exposure but were finally able to call it a wrap.

There is plenty of footage which ended up on the cutting room floor that will hopefully never see the light of day as it’s more than a little weird and would probably emotionally scar any viewer for life. And all that took long hours of standing around in the cold that i’ll never get back. I bet the Aardman animation studios are all cosy and warm. If i’m ever to attempt anything like this again I’ll be making sure it’s warm outside or we have such mod cons as central heating

Anyway, once principal photography was finished we realised we needed some musical accompaniment befitting of such a creation so we put out the call and came up with 3 very different soundtracks. The first version will probably not play in certain countries on youtube as The Man probably has certain copyright issues as it features tracks that are already out there but that’s where our other versions come in as both feature an original score which should play internationally no problem.

What else can we say about the video apart from the fact that it features anthropomorphic spray cans, the Graffiti Removal Squad (first featured here), sharks (one of which is gay but we had a hard time portraying that!), Tom Selleck (although I like to think he’s in his Thomas Magnum persona), a fireball (from Streetfigher 2 obviously) and, of course, the plucky little robin a.k.a the storm bird in Norse mythology.

Finally, whilst I like to think our video has a certain naive rustic charm there are those who treat the subject with a little more professionalism. So for those who haven’t seen it here’s a little link to a much more polished creation featuring light stencils by our good man Pahnl.

Cheers

Skunk by George Michael

I like George Michael. He makes me laugh. Why on earth he doesn’t just get himself a driver/chauffeur i’ll never know. If you follow the link here and scroll down to the bit where it says ‘Drugs’ you will get a quick precis of his arrests over the past few years. Now i’m not saying that he shouldn’t be able to smoke what he wants but why on earth he insists on crashing into just about everything on his way home i’m still not sure.

Sometimes it’s just too easy to mock troubled celebrities…

I liked this one so much we have even got it framed up in a nice little box frame (and it’s still for sale if anyone’s interested!)

Cocaine by Kate Moss

Get that London look! There’s nothing quite like mocking troubled celebrities. It just makes me feel warm inside. I just wonder how long it will be before we see products such as this on the shelves? Surely it’s not going to be too long before we have the Kate Moss Autograph Collection available to purchase for all those of legal age. And don’t forget this imported Bolivian flake is of course, fair trade! All the more reason to purchase…

Heroin by Pete Doherty

Developed by Bayer. Perfected by Pete! Oh how could we avoid a target like Pete. Here we have a Pete Doherty endorsed pack of Heroin which includes two syringes of Pete’s all-time favourite 70% mix and all the paraphernalia you need for a great night in! There’s even a competition on the back to enter with the top prize being an exclusive house party hosted by Pete – at your house! Available at your local supermarket now! Of course, it isn’t really. Just a bit of package design by id-iom.

Interestingly Heroin was first trademarked by Bayer in 1895 and originally sold as a non-addictive morphine substitute!

The Bollywood Trip

On Monday night I went to the SouthBank Centre to watch ‘The Bollywood Trip’ which has apparently just arrived from Denmark amidst a flurry of 5* reviews. I can’t say i’m overly knowledgeable about Bollywood but I know what I like and I like the craziness and energy that can be found in many a Bollywood film. Therefore this easily convinced me to give this a go on a dark and miserable Monday evening…

The story follows a young man who is incarcerated in a Danish mental institute whilst the authorities try to ascertain exactly who he is. He claims to be a Bollywood star called Haroon and after a few days at the institute starts to make the patients more excitable. If I was to sum it up in one sentence it would have to be the description used in their literature of ‘One flew over the cuckoo’s nest meets indian dance’. Haroon’s effect on the patients is matched only by his effect on one of the doctor’s whom he attempts to assist in his attempts to woo the girl of his dreams. Overall i quite enjoyed it somehow expected more overall. Maybe I was hoping the dance scenes to be a bit more crazy, colourful and larger than life. Maybe i was hoping the play part would be a little more humourous. I’m not sure but either way it didn’t quite deliver for me.

After a little internet research there is a famous British Pakistani singer called Haroon who has sold millions of albums worldwide. I’m sure i’m only displaying my ignorance but perhaps the character of Haroon is based on him?? My lack of knowledge will prove my downfall some day…

Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

On a small side note – and just while i’m on the subject of Bollywood – I thought I may as well share my favourite film (although as i said earlier my knowledge is far from complete) which is Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! which i caught earlier this year. It’s a lighthearted look at the trials and tribulations of a lovable thief called Lucky and is based on the real life exploits of Devinder Singh who was, by all accounts, the bane of the Delhi police until his capture in 2007. Give it a watch!
